The morning dawned much as it had yesterday with high winds which made me wonder if we would be able to take off. Fortunately, the wind had abated a little by the afternoon when we were to depart. Talking of wind, it was so strong that the waterfalls were being blown back up the mountains. It was a strange sight!

I wondered what the white streaks were along the slopes ....

... when we got closer we realised they were waterfalls being blown backwards

Eventually we were up the air and flying out over the magical Faroes. We arrived to grey skies and threatening rain at the rather run-down Edinburgh airport where we discovered that the e-Sim I had bought didn’t work – drat! There goes our navigation.

Flying into Scotland
Eventually we found the campervan hire rep who took us (on a loong walk to the furthest corner of the long term parking lot) to hand over the keys to the van and give us a very quick rundown on how things worked which we didn't remember of course. We were then on our own and bravely struck out for a camping site. After a nail-biting confusing drive and, after darkness had total engulfed us, we opened a gate to a ‘members only’ spot off a narrow lane, parked and collapsed ready to do battle in the morning if/when challenged – we simply had no place else to go. The place we were trying to find had apparently closed. We had shopped for some supplies so had the makings for dinner – except we couldn’t light the oven and didn’t have any power, but we did have gas and wine thank goodness! NOT a good start to this trip but we managed as you do and eventually fell into bed exhausted.

It's amazing what you can do with a pan - and a glass of wine!
And yes, I was challenged quite belligerently in the morning when I went to get water but we survived and headed for Dumfries to hopefully get some resolution to the internet issue. We did albeit after many hours and lots of walking – and a pub lunch! Then we headed out of town to a delightful camping spot by a stream where we were warmly welcomed by the owner. We stayed a couple of nights to settle ourselves in the van and make ready for the weeks ahead.

Pretty meadow flowers
The camping-holiday park had a beautiful meadow next door so we spent some time wandering looking at flowers and birds which calmed our nerves and put us in a better frame of mind. From there, it was on to Wales - south and west.
